Welcome

Welcome to Jim's 2008 Atlantic Coast -> Skyline Drive -> Blue Ridge Parkway Ride Web Journal.  This site will receive daily journal entries as the ride progresses. It will be a ride on a touring bicycle from Connecticut to the end of The Blue Ridge Parkway in Cherokee, North Carolina. The route will follow the Adventure Cycling Association's Atlantic Coast Route from northern Connecticut to just west of Washington, DC. From there the route will go west to Front Royal, VA where Skyline Drive begins. Once on Skyline Drive the route will be hilly, narrow, and will contain many switch backs, some bridges and a bunch of tunnels. There will be about 48,600 feet of vertical change over 570 miles. There will also be limited services which may require going down a couple of thousand feet off the ridge to restock and then climb back up to resume the route.

This site will contain a diary of the trip, and include pictures, information and as usual general musings about things that I think about along the way.

It is my intent to share some experiences, show some pictures, and perhaps philosophize on life in general.  The site will also show statistics and other information about the trip for those who like to see things like that.

The journal will be made available to family and friends and anyone else who seems interested either before or en route. Finally the link to this site will be provided to Adventure Cycling Association so they can post the link to provide information to others planning a similar ride.

Enjoy the log postings and share the adventure!

Sincerely,

Jim Smith
