Malta, MT to Glasgow MT

How is it down by you? Did you get much rain?

Yep, the forecast was right, rain in the morning (and plenty of it). We suited up for rain right away. Our plan called for a 110-mile day but it was obvious that that was out of the question as I was feeling sluggish and so was Nick. Our progress was very slow partly because of the rain gear, the cold (it’s in the low 50’s), and the aftermath of the 153-mile day two days ago. Also it’s hard to get motivated when it’s rainy and cold. In Nick’s words: “It’s so depressing!!” We changed or goal to Glasgow about 71 miles before we stopped for our second breakfast. It was only 27 MI to where we stopped for that breakfast and it took us close to three hours: not good progress.

As we approached the place on the cycling map that indicated food we saw a sign that said: “O’Brian’s Café Just Ahead”. We rode another three or four miles until we reached a café (it wasn’t called O’Brian’s the place changed names and nobody bothered to change the sign). At home “just ahead” means fifty to one hundred yards, here it means miles.

A typical second breakfast is coffee, two eggs & toast, two 10” pancakes, home fries, and a glass of orange juice. The waitress said as we left “It’s a wonder you can even move after eating all that.” While we were eating a couple of locals were talking weather when one asked the other “How is it down by you? Did you get much rain?” I thought that quite odd as it was raining steady all morning. Later on the road I could see why he asked. On the right side of the road off in the distance it was raining and stormy. Off to the left the clouds were white and fluffy with the sun showing through in spots. It was probably 20 miles off to the left and 20 miles off to the right.

We rode by a small herd of horses just on the other side of the fence and I spoke to them and gave a couple of clicking sounds. The whole herd trotted along side of us for a couple of hundred yards and when we stopped to take a picture they stopped. That was cool.

Our Riding Companions

It was a long and hard day although not too many miles were ridden. I recovered and felt stronger after second breakfast. Nick was somewhat sluggish all day. I told him a number of times he drinks too much water. Having to stop to take a leak at least once an hour is way too much. He says he will cut back on that. We’ll see.
