Forest Grove, OR to Pacific Ocean to Tillamook Forest, OR

Pacific Rear Wheel Dip

It was a great day for cycling After the official weigh in. The bike, all gear & me weighed in at 212 before the roll out of Oak Tree B & B. I was hoping to be closer to 200 but I guess I had to take into account the big breakfast Donna made. Nick and I were both stuffed. We also took some cinnamon rolls and a banana for the road. We rewarded ourselves for the first climb of the trip (1,526 feet) with the cinnamon rolls.

Once we hit the crest of the climb in Tillamook State Forest you could feel the cool breeze from the ocean. The descent was long and gradual as was the climb. We had planned to have lunch in the town of Tillamook but upon the advice of a bike shop owner there was supposed to be a better place on the way to the shore. We never found it. Just as well as we stopped at a place called Wisky River Café which served a fairly large portion of fish & chips.

The coast was beautiful and the traditional wheel dip went without a hitch. We planned to stay the night at Cape Lookout State Park but got there around 2:30. We decided to start the ride back east as the section about 30 miles back east in the Tillamook State Forest was just beautiful with the Wilson River running through it and we decided for the sound of the river over the ocean. The campground at Cape Lookout State Park was packed and although they never turn away hiker / bikers it would make for a noisy night. Also, we would be up about one third of the climb to the summit that we went over yesterday when we ended the day.

The day finished with a total of 101 miles. We had planned on 100 when we turned east, but we "rode the extra mile". We camped at a State Forest Campground. No showers no nothing - - but the soothing sound of the river.
